The performance of most animals deteriorates with age. Motivated by the inconsistency in the literature regarding the effect of parental age on offspring traits and performance, we studied how parental age affects offspring development time, body mass, and starvation and cold tolerance in the red flour beetle (Tribolium castaneum). Offspring of old parents pupated later and at a higher body mass, and there was a general positive correlation between body mass and starvation tolerance. Despite their higher body mass, offspring of old parents tolerated starvation less well than those of young parents, emphasizing the impaired performance of the former. However, parental age did not affect offspring thermal tolerance and offspring of old parents were not more sensitive to cold shock than those of young parents. We also examined how ageing affects body mass and cold tolerance in the parental generations. By contrast to the effect of ontogeny on thermal tolerance, which is better known, change in thermal tolerance with age is seldom studied and can take different shapes. Old beetles were more sensitive to cold shock than younger beetles. Similar to cold tolerance, body mass decreased with age. In summary, older beetles reflect a worse physiological condition than younger ones. This study was conducted to investigate the repellent efficacy of essential oils (Origanum vulgare, Pimpinella anisum, and Tanacetum cinerariifolium) and four plant extracts (Agastache rugosa, Capsicum annuum, Citrus reticulata, and Ginkgo biloba) against Tribolium castaneum (adults and larvae) and Plodia interpunctella (larvae). Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of carvacrol, anethole, and jasmolin I as the predominant constituent in O. vulgare, P. anisum, and T. cinerariifolium, respectively. Furthermore, ethyl hexopyranoside, 9,12‐octadecadienoic acid, cyclopentanol, and 2‐cresol were identified in A. rugosa, C. annuum, C. reticulata, and G. biloba, respectively. The repellent efficacy of each essential oil, plant extract, and the combination of oils was evaluated using a specially designed cylinder trap for 120 h. Among the three oils, O. vulgare and T. cinerariifolium had greatest repellent efficacy against P. interpunctella larvae. T. cinerariifolium exhibited effective repellence against the adults and larvae of T. castaneum. Therefore, O. vulgare (O) and T. cinerariifolium (T) were selected for further investigation of combined effects. Two essential oils were mixed in three different ratios of OT1 (1:3), OT2 (1:1), and OT3 (3:1). The repellent efficacies of OT1 and OT2 against the adults of T. castaneum were significantly greater than that of OT3. OT1 was effective against the larvae of T. castaneum, whereas OT2 was effective against the larvae of P. interpunctella. OT1 enhanced the repellent efficacy by approximately five times against larvae of T. castaneum, compared with that of T. cinerariifolium. Terpinen-4-ol has high fumigating activity to stored-grain pests including Tribolium confusum. To understand the detoxification of terpinen-4-ol in insects, proteomic analysis was performed to identify related proteins and pathways in response to terpinen-4-ol fumigation in T. confusum. By using isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ)-based strategy, 4,618 proteins were obtained from T. confusum adults in the present study. Comparative proteomic analysis showed that 148 proteins were upregulated and 137 proteins were downregulated in beetles under the LC50 of terpinen-4-ol treatment for 24 hr. According to functional classifications, differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were enriched in xenobiotic metabolism pathways. In the detoxification pathway, the levels of 25 cytochrome P450s, 5 glutathione S-transferases, and 2 uridine diphosphate (UDP)-glucuronosyltransferases were changed, most of which were upregulated in T. confusum exposed to terpinen-4-ol. The results indicated that terpinen-4-ol was potentially metabolized and detoxified by enzymes like P450s in T. confusum. 相似文献

研究1%蛇床子素粉剂在5种处理浓度下对3种储粮害虫谷蠹Rhizopertha dominica Fabricius、玉米象Sitophilus zeamai Motschulsky和赤拟谷盗Tribolium castaneum Herbst的防治效果。室内毒力测定结果表明,按有效成分0.5mg/kg(蛇床子素:粮食)浓度处理粮食,7d后,粮食中谷蠹、玉米象和赤拟谷盗的校正死亡率分别为97.78%、100%、86.70%,防治效果优于对照药剂防虫磷和谷虫净。将药剂处理4个月后的粮食进行接虫试验,15d后谷蠹和玉米象的防治效果仍可达100%,达到储粮害虫防治要求。 相似文献

在30 ℃、75 %相对湿度条件下研究种间竞争对玉米象(Sitophilus zeamais)、谷蠹(Rhizopertha domini-ca)、赤拟谷盗(Triboliumcastaneum)和锈赤扁谷盗(Cryptolestes ferrugineus)4种主要储粮害虫种群动态的影响,并对种群动态进行回归分析。结果表明,玉米象与谷蠹、赤拟谷盗与锈赤扁谷盗混合饲养种群增长均受到显著抑制,玉米象和谷蠹对赤拟谷盗和锈赤扁谷盗的种群增长具有明显的促进作用,赤拟谷盗和锈赤扁谷盗对玉米象和谷蠹的种群增长具有一定的抑制作用。回归分析结果表明玉米象种群最大增长潜能最大,锈赤扁谷盗最小,种群增长率变化规律不明显。 相似文献
